earthworks workshop

earthworks

We’re continuing this month’s earth / natural materials themes with Earthworks…

THIS SATURDAY!

Pitch in to beautify our neighborhood as we join with the community to clean up garbage and clutter at Millcrest Park in West Norwood.

Afterward, local artist Laura McNeel will lead a workshop on Earthworks, site-specific sculptures made completely from natural materials, which are assembled and left in the natural landscape. Following a brief introduction to works by well known land artists such as Goldsworthy, Smithson, and Turrel, participants will then work together to create an earthwork of their own, using materials found on site. Call 513. 578.3069 for more information or simply show up to join in on the fun!

SATURDAY, April 25

10a – 2p

Rivers & Tides

We’ve allowed our recent screening of Art:21 ECOLOGY to set the tone for events at studio e for a while.  We’re planning open studio events and film screenings that explore the relationship between artists and the natural world.  Send us your ideas for projects, films, excursions… or just keep an eye on the calendar and join in!

Join us next Monday (April 20th) at 7:30p for Andy Goldsworthy: Rivers & Tides

Andy GoldsworthyAndy Goldsworthy

“Wildly praised by the nation’s top critics, the theatrical hit RIVERS AND TIDES is a mesmerizing, poetic and curiously contemplative portrait of revered Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, whose long-winding rock walls, icicle assemblages and other intricate, druidic masterpieces are made entirely of materials found in the wild. Gorgeously shot and edited by director Thomas Riedelsheimer, RIVERS AND TIDES is an intoxicating study of the fragile relationship between man, art and nature.

gratitude

we recently received an anonymous donation for $5000.

while we understand the many good reasons for donating anonymously, it does feel awkward having no one to thank.

so.

on behalf of our team, thank you. it is much needed and will be used well.

thanks also on behalf of the many students who will benefit from your investment during our summer programs.

(and thanks, world, for producing persons who do such things!)

Art21: ECOLOGY

Presenting… for the next installment of our film series… the return of Art:21.

Join us Monday April 6th at 7:30pm in studio e to view the the ECOLOGY segment from Art21’s fourth season.

Laura McNeel wlll host this screening and discussion of “four artists who explore the relationship of nature and culture, including the submission of wilderness to civilization, the foundations of scientific knowledge, the impact of technology on biology, and our relationship to the earth forged by working the land.”

Laura’s own current work is responsive to these themes.  Check back later this week, as we’ll be posting some examples from her recent exhibition at Enjoy The Arts.

An invitation from Laura:

“Whether responding to the sublime beauty of an untouched landscape or commenting on the damaging effects of pollution on the environment, artists across time have been drawn to the complex relationship between man and nature. In light of the recent “green” revolution and rush to” save our planet”, contemporary artists seem to have an even greater interest in capturing humanity’s fluctuating adoration and carelessness toward the earth. In the following weeks we will explore the works of several groups of artists who concentrate on this theme. The artwork will span a variety of media (architecture, photography, sculpture, installation, digital illustration) and subject matter (political, scientific, biographical) so all are likely to find something to enjoy!”

Stay tuned for more events within this theme — full listing of April events coming soon.

Art Opening Follow-Up

Thanks to everyone who came to the gallery show on Wednesday.  We were glad to see so many students, parents, NHS faculty, and other neighborhood folks!

We’ll be assembling a more detailed summary and gallery of photos from the night and, later on, some special gallery pages to feature our winning artists.  Stay tuned.

The show will be on display for most of April, so If you didn’t make it on Wednesday, be sure to visit Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2p to 6p.

This Monday, MARCH 23 at studio e, Owen will be hosting a special presentation of HELVETICA, a recent documentary on typography and text in modern design.

For more about this gifted graphic designer, photographer, and educator, read below!

VISUAL FLUENCY | Owen Brock

Over twenty-five years in the field of visual design, set against a backdrop of extensive worldwide travel, has combined to give Owen A. Brock a keen intuition about people and their cultures—which leads to some fairly unpredictable creative ideas. OB.1

Owen is the founder of Visual Fluency, a Cincinnati Design firm serving a wide array of creative, corporate and non-profit clients with an intelligent blend of Design, Photography and PhotoFusion. He is a man who wears many hats: one moment the highly experienced designer creating a corporate logo for a large for profit company, then the next moment he is half way around the world in a South African squatter settlement, taking photographs for a humanitarian organization. Sometimes he is displaying photographs painted with subtleties of light and texture, attempting to capture something transcendent in nature. OB.2 (design)

HELVETICA (a Monday Night Film Series special)

COME TO STUDIO E // (1757 Mills Ave. in Norwood) this MONDAY, MARCH 23 // 7:30-9:30PM for a PUBLIC SCREENING / DISCUSSION OF HELVETICA* hosted by OWEN BROCK (local designer, photographer, and founder of VISUAL FLUENCY)

“We live in a visual world. We are immersed in communication, it is as ubiquitous as the very air we breathe. The film Helvetica portrays a brief but succinct look at the nature of typography and the role it has played in the last 50 years of visual communication. The film is both educational and compelling at the same time. The evening will be comprised of approximately sixty minutes of viewing and sixty minutes of discussion. All preconceived notions about typography and visual communications very welcome!”- a note from Owen

*Helvetica is a production of Swiss Dots, in association with Veer.

This event is presented by studio e// The St. Elizabeth Arts Foundation as a part of the Monday Nite Film Series. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Last Monday at the CAC

Thanks to everyone who made it out last Monday for our excursion to see Tara Donovan’s work at the CAC (Contemporary Art Center)!

For those of you who weren’t able to come…I HIGHLY recommend taking a trip of your own to see this delightful, awe-inspiring collection. Comprised entirely of mass produced objects such as Styrofoam cups, toothpicks, buttons, and scotch tape, Donovan’s sculptures drew us in with their organic beauty and then bowled us over with their impressive, meticulous assemblage of commonplace materials. This “ah-ha moment” was especially fun to watch on the faces of a group of school-age children touring the exhibit along with our group. From the magic of the materials to the sublime presence of each individual form, this is truly a show that everyone, of all ages and experience levels will enjoy!

Since the work will be here until May 3, we’re considering going again. If you (and your family) are interested in joining us, please let me (Laura) know and we’ll try to nail down a date that works for all!
